Though I primarily focus on wedding photography, I also love to do maternity photography. It gives me a warm loving feeling to do the maternity photos of couples because of the great love and affection they show each other! Whenever I do such portraits I always think to myself that the future mother and father practically shine with excitement and anticipation for when their baby will be born. If you are thinking of doing a maternity photo shoot, you will want to look your very best. After all, you want to look at your photos in years to come and remember those days of anticipation with great fondness! In that spirit, I have a few tips here to help you prepare for your photo shoot and to get the best possible portraits you can!
Ladies, let me start with you. Nothing shows that you are an expectant mother more than your belly and in your photos you want to emphasize that. And how do you do that? With your dress of course! What I have noticed in my years of experience is that wearing a long, flowing, vibrant, and light colored dress often does the best job of accentuating your belly and bringing out your own beauty at the same time. If your dress is too dark in can hide your belly and make the photo seem less happy. On the other hand, a light, vibrant color reflects happiness and joy and that is what you want those who see your photo to feel! Plus, if I take a photo of you near flowers you will like a wonderful as a flower yourself! A white dress is also very lovely because with a white background (like a marble building with great architecture for instance) your photo will look like it was taken in heaven! Pants can work too, but I suggest that you avoid blue jeans.
Along with your dress, be sure to wear lovely shoes. But be sure that they are as comfortable as possible since you don’t want a lot of pain on such an important day. There are other obvious things that you can do; most are obvious but you would be surprised how many people come to their photo shoot unprepared! Of course have your hair and nails done and make your selection of style carefully. Bring some extra makeup with you to the maternity photo shoot just in case you need to cover smudges. One really nice touch is that you can have a bouquet of flowers with you. There are so many fantastic poses I can put you in with a gorgeous bouquet of flowers! The flowers highlight your beauty, bring balance to the photos, and enhance the overall happy feel of your portrait. I have seen some women wear a wreath of flowers in their hair. The effect in the photos is remarkable, making the expectant mother glow from head to toe!
Now some advice for the guys! In your wife’s maternity photos you should appear masculine, but loving; strong, but gentle. First of all, I suggest a nice pair of slacks that fit you well. Baggy slacks make you look sloppy. And for goodness sakes don’t wear cross-trainers with your slacks on photo shoot day! Instead, invest in a nice pair of dress shoes (not too formal though). As a Virginia Beach photographer (one of the few affordable photographers at that) I am amazed how often this mistake is made! Avoid casual t-shirts and instead wear a button-up shirt or a polo shirt. And guys, make sure your shirt either matches your wife’s dress or complements it! Not only will your maternity photos together look fantastic, but your wife will truly appreciate your effort! As with a bouquet of flowers for your wife, having a dressy jacket with you as a prop goes a long way. Having you pose lovingly with your wife while having your jacket slung over your shoulder brings a fun uniqueness to the photo! And of course, there are a thousand other ways I can pose you with a jacket together with your beautiful wife!
Finally, there are some things you can do to draw attention to your baby! If you bring an ultrasound I can include it in your portrait. I can do the same if you bring a pair of baby boots or even a chalkboard on which you write a loving message for your future child! A beautiful maternity portrait of you being kissed by your husband while you are holding an ultrasound of your baby will show him or her years down the road that you were eagerly waiting for the moment when you would meet; anticipating all the things you would teach them and the joys and sorrows you would share.
I am one of the several affordable photographers in Virginia Beach. Yet, my love for photography is profound. Not only do I enjoy the process of photography, but I also love to interact with my clients and see their happiness when they are pleased with the photos I can make for them. It gives me a feeling of accomplishment and of helping others remember the important times in their lives for years and years into the future! So when you think of Virginia Beach photographers, remember that I always ready to capture your happiest moments in photos!
